Being Hungry For Living is Hard!

Being healthy is hard! You won’t get me trying to tell you otherwise. It is something you have to want to do and something that takes daily effort. This is especially true when it comes to our society today, when 64% of Americans are overweight or obese. It is very easy to eat and live unhealthy; it takes drive and effort to make better choices.
Even with all the press that is focused on eating healthy, being active, specialty health food grocery stores, gyms, diet plans & workout classes why is it still so hard to do? All that stuff is right there in front of us, why is it so hard to reach out and take hold of it?
One of the main factors, I believe, is cost. It is expensive to be healthy. It is 100 times easier to buy crap food because it cost less. At this point in my life I do not have a family to support and take care of. I can’t imagine the extra burden both financially and physically it would take to prepare fresh healthy meals for a family of four every night of the week.
As much as we try to make healthy eating and living the norm in this country, it is so far from being that. It is hard to find a healthy option when on the run; restaurants give you 4 times a normal portion when you are out to eat, plus what makes you want to order an egg white omelet when you can have your favorite stack of French toast or pancakes at the neighborhood diner?  Why after a long day of work do you want to get up and go to the gym when you could lounge of the couch watching your favorite TV show?
It’s not impossible to live healthy, it’s just hard. It’s something that I struggle with daily. There are always new temptations and new excuses lurking around every isle in the grocery store. It is easy to make excuses and allow yourself to be lazy. What’s hard is making good choices each and everyday to keep you on track. I really believe that those recent nutrigrain commercials are true; one good decision will lead to the next. The more good choices you make when it comes to your health and diet, the more good choices you are likely to continue to make. Having fruit as a snack instead of a candy bar will help you to choose grilled chicken rather than fried chicken for dinner that night. Why ruin all the good you already accomplished that day?

I have been lazy lately! I have had a lot of things going on and started to skip my weekly trips to the gym.  One week turned into two which turned into three which turned into a month! It is so easy to continue in that pattern once you start. I am very happy to report that last night I took a bike ride, the first time I've been on my bike since last fall. Now I hope to get back to riding most nights after work as well as hitting the gym a few days a week!

What are some things you struggle with when trying to stay on track?
What is hard for you?
What are some things you do to help keep yourself motivated when surrounded by temptation?

  1. For me, it's all about planning. If I don't have my meals planned out, or set aside time in my calendar for working out...well, it just isn't going to happen! Which reminds me - I really should do my meal plan for the week. Otherwise I risk coming home from a long day of work and giving in to my husband's request for pizza or some other not-so-good choice. Ha!

  2. For me breaking my routine and then getting back into it are what I struggle with most. I currently can't afford a gym membership so staying motivated after getting home from work to immediately run or do some other at home workout are my focus. My food weakness in the summer is definitely ice cream. I know I can't buy a whole tub as I have ZERO self control :)

  3. Good for you for getting back on the bike! Yay! And you are so right about the fact that it is expensive to eat healthy! The hardest thing for me is this time of night- 9:00ish, when I'm sitting and watching a favorite show and get the hunger pang. I need to find something healthy to eat that is delicious and makes me feel full. Pretzels and cheese usually do the trick, but that is NOT GOOD! Great post!

  5. Rae- I am the same way, I do much better when I have my meals planned out and I bring my lunch with me to work.

Hutch- I agree that is my biggest struggle too. I also have a weakness for ice cream or anything sweet. My boyfriend doesn't understand that when he brings home a carton of Chocolate peanut butter ice cream (My Favorite) I can't just have ONE scoop!! ;)

Kristen- Thanks! That’s a bad time for me too! Sometimes I try and have an apple, but usually I end up eating a Weight Watchers candy which isn’t good either but I look at it as my desert.

Delicious- Isn't it so annoying LOL Who goes to McDonalds and wants a salad??!? LOL

  6. I just posted on all of this yesterday. I'm tried of the work, planning and exercise but then again I'm not. I love what's happening, I love feeling I just need to remember, like you said, one day at a time.
Thanks for sharing. Take care and God Bless!!!
